Mr. Volker Perthes, special representative of the UN Secretary General and head of the UN Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS), arrived in Khartoum on the morning of the 2nd of February 2021.

With Sudan currently in a vital transitional period, the mission, as established by the UN Security Council Resolution 2524/2020, covers four general areas.

  2. Ensure transition towards democratic governance.

  3. End Sudan’s isolation from the international community.

  4. Mobilize international resources to revitalize the tattered economy and aid in national growth.

Within that context, Ambassador Omer Al-Sheikh, Chairman of the National Committee for Cooperation and Coordination with the UN Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS) welcomed Mr. Volker. He expressed his confidence in the successful leading of the mission and the effective tackling of Sudan’s issues during the transitional period.

Mr. Perthes demonstrated his enthusiasm and dedication to ensuring the success of the mission. “I am looking forward to working with the transitional authorities and the great people of Sudan. UNITAMS has been established, and I will devote my energy on supporting Sudan to achieve its goals of democratic transformation, peace, and economic recovery,” he stated.
